Guide for students
How students join EduPress, what they can do, and how their accounts are protected.
Guide for students
EduPress connects you with your school, your classmates and your teachers. You can follow your school's news, take part in its communities, practise for exams, and find opportunities.
Joining EduPress
You can join in the EduPress app or on the web.
- In the app, choose Student. You give your name, a username, your email address, your phone number, your date of birth, your school and a password.
- On the web, Join now creates a member account. After you confirm your email, you choose your school, and your account becomes a student account while the school looks at your request. Until you choose, see the guide for members without a school.
Everyone gives a date of birth, and you must be at least 13. A younger child's account is created and held by a parent or guardian.
Your password must be at least 12 characters.
Confirming your account
EduPress emails you a 6-digit code that works for 10 minutes. In the app you can confirm your phone number instead, with a code sent by text message. Until you confirm, you cannot react, comment, connect with people or report anything.
Proving who you are
If you sign up as a student in the app, you have 30 days to prove who you are with your school ID card and a selfie, taken in the app. Your school can also confirm you. If neither happens in 30 days, your place in your school's community is paused until it does. The same ID card or selfie cannot be used for two accounts.
Joining your school
When you ask to join your school, the school reviews the request. You can belong to one school at a time. If you are already linked to a school, you cannot switch to another one through the app.
What you can do
- Follow and read. Follow your school and other schools, and read their posts, results and events.
- Join in. React to and comment on posts, and connect with people. You can do this once your account is confirmed.
- Write your own posts. A personal post can have up to 3,000 characters of text and up to 4 photos.
- Message. Send messages to people you are connected with. Photos can only be sent between two adults.
- Message a school. Write to a school that has turned messaging on; the school can only reply. If you are under 18, a guardian must allow that school first, and you can ask them from the app. Your guardian sees the school's replies.
- Communities. Join your school's communities and reply to events. You can also give to a community fundraiser from UGX 500 to UGX 5,000,000 with MTN or Airtel mobile money. You approve each payment with your PIN on the paying phone.
- Quizzes. Take practice quizzes.
- Tyra, the study tutor. Tyra gives you 50 free messages a day. Student accounts can buy extra message packs:
- 100 messages for UGX 5,000
- 300 messages for UGX 12,000
- 1,000 messages for UGX 35,000
- Your CV. From Senior 4 onwards, your CV is built from your profile, and only you can see it. If you are under 18, it shows your school's name, website and town instead of your own contact details.
- Alumni lists. Once you are an adult and have left a school, you may appear on its alumni list. The Alumni lists card on your profile has one switch that hides you from every list.
Applying for jobs and opportunities
To apply for a job you must:
- be at least 16
- verify your identity with a national ID, passport or driving licence, plus a selfie
If you are under 18, you also need a guardian linked to your account, and your guardian is told when you apply. An employer receives your contact details only when they move you to the interview stage. If you are under 18, your guardian must also agree for that application.
Some listings have a minimum age, and you cannot apply for one you are too young for.
If you are under 18
EduPress has extra protections for everyone under 18. For example:
- you are never listed on school or business pages
- you can connect only with other students under 18
- you never see paid adverts
Read Keeping young people safe for the full list.
Staying safe
- Block someone to stop them messaging you and to remove them from your lists.
- Report posts, comments, schools, people or messages that break the community guidelines. If a guardian is linked to your account, they are told when you block or report someone.
